Management Information Systems Careers

Please look at a copy of an email we received from the University of Georgia's Management Information Systems:

The University System of Georgia has some of the world’s top rated degree programs in Management Information Systems.  For example, this year (2010) the MIS program in the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia was ranked #12 by US News & World Report. Other great programs exist at Georgia State University, Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State, Georgia Southern, and elsewhere.

Many students, parents, and perhaps even counselors are not familiar with the MIS major.  The degree is offered in Business Schools and is a mixture of business and information technology.  MIS professionals analyze business processes, and then design, develop, implement, and manage the information systems that support organizational needs. They solve business problems using technology.

More people are familiar with Computer Science as a major because it is mentioned more frequently in the media.  Computer Science focuses primarily on the technology while MIS is about the use of the technology for business purposes.  MIS professionals spend less time behind a computer screen, and more time working with people and teams.

You may not know that across the country there are as many students majoring in MIS as CS.  The demand and salary levels for MIS graduates are high (currently the starting salaries are among the highest on campus, with average salaries in the $50s).  The field is exciting and the future jobs outlook is great. Typical entry level job titles include systems analyst, database manager, application developer, project manager, and information systems consultant.

We would like to encourage more students to major in MIS, either at the University of Georgia or elsewhere.  In support of this, our faculty, students, and alumni have created a five minute video that describes the MIS field, the career opportunities, and what the MIS major at the Terry College of Business has to offer. There is a link to it on our MIS departmental website (
www.terry.uga.edu/mis) and it can be accessed directly on YouTube at (www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0yGT7im2s4).
