Move On When Ready

Two years ago, the lawmakers in Atlanta passed a law that allows a student to leave high school early (before he or she has completed all of the necessary credits to graduate) and start college as a full time student at a college or university in the State of Georgia.  It is called "Move On When Ready."  When Ready is the important phrasing in this law.  Only students who are intellectually and socially ready and who possess the necessary wisdom to handle the college environment should be considered "ready."  For those who are, this program has some exciting things to offer.

This program is vaguely similar to the ACCEL program that you can learn more about on February 1oth at 6 pm in the Fine Arts Auditorium, in that it allows a student to earn dual credits.  This means that the course that the student takes at the college will also count for a high school credit to help the student work toward graduation requirements.  This program requires that the student be a full-time college student, therefore the student would no longer be considered a high school student.  There are various caveats that you will want to educate yourself on before considering whether or not this is a feasible option for your student.  First of all, the requirements to do the Move On When Ready Program are stiffer than the ACCEL program.  Second, if your student fails a class at college, they are immediately sent back to high school.  Sometimes this could cause a student to not be able to graduate on time.  There is an attached brochure below that will tell you more about this program.  Also, check out this website for rules and regulations of this program: http://www.doe.k12.ga.us/DMGetDocument.aspx/MOWR_Guidelines011910.pdf?p=6CC6799F8C1371F6A69629F4BFBCE78DBD08B7A73AEBE2DB9EB4924F8FF1A3E5&Type=D
