Please see the following email we received from Ms. Cindy Romero from UGA regarding this year's leadership conference for Latina/o students:
Dear Educators, Guidance Counselors, Administrators, and Parents:
Students for Latina/o Empowerment, a student advocacy organization at the University of Georgia , would like to invite your students to apply and participate in our annual ¡Sí Se Puede! Youth Leadership Conference on March 26, 2011. This year, we celebrate our sixth year hosting the one-day conference that targets seventh through twelfth grade students who are interested in learning about higher education as well as community activism. ¡Si, Se Puede! was initiated in 2006 as a way to attempt closing the achievement gap that plagues the Latino community. The conference strives to accomplish this by promoting the significance of pursuing higher education and by empowering Latina/o students with the knowledge and motivation to reach their aspirations. The conference was named ¡Si, Se Puede! in honor of Cesar Chavez's work to improve human rights. The ¡Si, Se Puede! Youth Leadership Conference consists of interactive workshops in which students learn about a variety of subjects, including U.S. Latino culture, art, and activism, as well as the benefits of graduating from high school and pursuing post-secondary education. In addition, the youth conference provides the participants with a resource fair where they can learn about other institutions and organizations that can be beneficial when applying for college. If you are interested in having your student apply to attend the program, applications will be made available via email (sle.youth.conference@gmail.com) and on our website (http://www.uga.edu/sle/ssp/) beginning on February 20, 2011. Applications will be due by midnight March 11, 2011. The webpage for the event is located below. To obtain an application, simply select the "Application" tab at the top of the page.
