How can that be when they always have their hand out for parental donations?! It is true. The 403 passing AP (Advanced Placement) test scores (3, 4, or 5) that NOHS students scored last May translate into a lot of money that parents are not going to have to pay for a college class later on. The average 3 hour course at a public college in the State of Georgia costs the parent an average of $457, not counting fees and books. These are dollars that can be spent in other ways. If you have a student who saved you money last year, give him or her a big hug and say thank you for all of the hard work that the AP course required. Also, the AP teacher deserves a big shout out for giving up hours of evening time to prepare to teach to their fullest each day, for giving up time on several Saturdays a year to meet with students to prep for exams, and for being willing to expose your student to highly rigorous work. While AP courses are hard for the student and can be expensiveto offer, the benefits are truly amazing. At North Oconee, we have 15 different AP courses that we offer. Whether or not a student earns college credit, these classes expose the student to very rigorous work and best prepare him or her to survive in the college environment. If you are interested in learning more about the AP program at NOHS, check out the student handbook at http://www.oconeeschools.org/nohs/files/OCSS%20Course%20Catalog%20SY10.pdf on page 20.
If your student is dedicated and willing to put in the extra effort required to succeed in an AP class, we encourage you to research the class he or she is interested in taking next year, and start gearing up for registration this coming February. Don't miss out on the "Big Bucks Bonanza"!!
