Several Writing Contests that You Need to Know About

1. Booth Western Art Museum's Writing Through Art Literary Contest
This contest was organized many years ago by Doc Stovall, who was killed in a car accident last year. In 2002, Doc was honored as Georgia's Official Cowboy Balladeer and in 2004 was the first cowboy singer inducted into the Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame. Doc visited NOHS three times over the last four years teaching students about cowboy poetry. He made many friends here at NOHS, and two of our students have won cash prizes from this contest. His wish was that the contest go on in his memory. See the website below for more information. This site also has a link to Annabel McSpadden's winning poem from last year. She recited this poem from memory and won $500! Deadline Feb 1

2. Global Connections Art and Essay Contest (Sponsored by the Istanbul Center in Atlanta)
This year's theme is "The human footprint on the environment--impacts and solutions." We've had students enter this contest for the last three years and had five NOHS students place at the state or region level. Two of these students along with their sponsoring teachers were awarded a ten day trip to Turkey for their efforts. Who will win this amazing trip this year? Deadline Jan 27th

3. Optimist International Essay Contest
Optimist International has announced its annual essay contest. This year’s topic is “How Can I Help My Friends Realize Their Value?” Students have the chance to receive a $6000 scholarship by winning at the Optimist International Level. The link below details the rules, deadlines, and expectations.
Last year we had two students win at the local level. (Two local Optimist Clubs, and NOHS students won BOTH contests!) Deadline Dec 17th
