Are You Afraid that You Are Going to Fail a Class this Semester?

In years past, NOHS has helped students who did not quite make the grade necessary to pass by the end of the semester.  This initiative has been called "Credit Recovery" in the past.  The name is changing to "Course Extension" to help with some confusion between "course recovery" and "credit recovery."  Course Extension is designed to help a student who has evidence of understanding a large portion of the material in a class, but just needs a little extra time to revisit a few topics to fill in the gaps.  The evidence that we use to determine if this is the case is a student's final grade in a class; it must be a 60 or better to be eligible to participate in an english, science, or social studies course. One other additional bit of evidence that we look for is a passing grade on an EOCT.  Because math is such a building course, we are very concerned about not having a solid foundation.  It is the general belief that a student would not be able to fill in all of the gaps that they might have in this program, so the final average is moved up from a 60 to a 65 for math courses.  Even then, we feel that is is best for students to only take what we call a "terminal" math class, which simply means it is the final planned math course for a student.

Upon completion of Course Extension, the failing grade will be replaced with a 70 and will be labeled as a credit that was earned through "Course Extension."

Course Extension applications are linked below.  Your student's teacher must agree that your student recovering a failing grade through Course Extension is a good idea before your student will be allowed to participate.  It will start on Saturday, January 5th and finish on January 23rd.  The cost for participation is $75 ($50 for Reduced Lunch and $25 for Free Lunch).  If you are thinking about this as an option, please contact your child's teacher before December 19th to discuss this option.  Print off an application and return it to North Oconee Guidance Office on January 2nd.  We are limited to 25 spaces, so we will prioritize the applications to determine who will receive a seat in Course Extension.  Read the information on the application link below to get full details.
