Career assessments are a great way for students to discover what their passions in life are and cross-reference those passions with talents. When a person can key in what they are good at doing and what they enjoy doing, they will grow and develop into a fully satisfying work-life for years to come. The adults know that when you are trapped in a job you hate, many bad fruits will grow from that. At NOHS, we encourage students to explore work world scenarios through our CTAE (Vocational training) courses and through Youth Apprenticeship programs. This part of the school curriculum will help students confirm what the career assessments tell them about career fit for them personally. There are some good, free career assessments on GA College 411 Career Assessments.
Another option that parents and students might be interested in is AIMS (Aptitude Inventory Measurement Service). This fee-based testing service will give a highly comprehensive assessment of interests, abilities and values of an individual student. This testing service will provide a comprehensive look into these areas and will provide counseling on what the results are saying and how to map out decisions about college majors, college choices and what outlooks for employment look like. AIMS is located in Texas and would normally require a trip out there to have the testing done. They will come to Athens if there are 15 or more people who are interested in having these tests administered. To learn more about this service, including the cost, go to www.aimstesting.org. After reading up on this service, if you are interested in speaking with someone, please call (972) 234-8373 ext. 106 and ask to speak to Alicia Schulze. If you would like to speak to a North Oconee parent who has done this with their student, please feel free to call Rob Bray at (678) 753-0204.
