PSAT- A Great Opportunity!
On Wednesday, October the 11th, North Oconee High School
will shut down for business to administer the PSAT to all 9th and 10th
graders. The State of Georgia and Oconee
County School System believe that this test is so important that they foot the
bill for EVERY 9th and 10th grade student.
Wow! That is putting their money
where their mouth is! They realize that
opportunities can abound for students if they take the PSAT and take it
seriously. Why does the PSAT matter?
Free practice for what the SAT will look like and a high
prediction of what actual SAT scores will look like.
Free tutoring service through Khan Academy that is
personalized to how well your student did on the PSAT and what areas need
improvement. Tutoring can then become
individualized to areas of weakness.
Many selective summer programs use this criteria for
admissions
MOWR requires a certain score for admissions, the PSAT would
provide a student with an idea of whether or not they are prepared to meet that
set score when they register for the SAT.
NOHS uses PSAT score reports to determine what AP's a
student should consider
Provides colleges and scholarship programs with student
information and demonstrates a desire to connect with them
So what about juniors, what do they do? TAKE THE PSAT!! We often get asked the question- Why would a
junior take the test, shouldn't they take the real thing? The PSAT is a better bet- it is a $17.00
practice that a student can take that provides them with insight as to how they
would do on the SAT without actually taking the SAT. They have time to do test prep and work on
those scores before they take the SAT (around $70.00) and see how they
perform. If you are a junior and planning
to attend a four or two year college (SAT/ACT scores are required for
admissions), you should register for the test.
Taking the test your junior year also puts you in the running for the
National Merit Scholarship Program through College Board. This is a HIGHLY competitive and prestigious
recognition. If you don't take the test
your junior year, you are not eligible for the program.
Please see the letter from Mr. Hamilton regarding the
registration process for the PSAT:
If you are an 11th grader and you do not register for the
PSAT, you will need to register for the Accuplacer. The Accuplacer is the college admissions exam
for technical schools. If your 11th
grader is planning to attend a technical college, this is a great option for
them to begin that admissions testing process.
The Accuplacer is free and will be administered in the Field House on
October 11th. We have 50 seats available
for this exam. Students will be accepted
to test on a first come first serve basis.
Please complete the form below to register for the Accuplacer.
