Our first Open House event is happening on our Oconee campus March 3rd. In order to attend, your students must sign-up. Click below to learn more about all our upcoming Open House events. We encourage you to share this digital postcard with your students!

Ga Center UGA Summer Camp for Future Leaders

My daughter is in 7th grade at MBMS & I am an Oconee graduate and am hoping you could help me promote a summer camp I will be leading in conjunction with the GA Center.
I am gearing it to adolescents 13-15 years old and want to develop leadership skills while also exposing them to basic child development concepts kids this age are interested in.
They will be learning sensory activities like making play-doh & gloop and how that helps a child's motor skills and brain development.
Then they'll have the opportunity to take those fun things they've made into the 3/4yr old classrooms at the CDL and guide the children with open-ended questions and play.
They'll also have the chance to begin the volunteer training program for teenagers at Sandy Creek Nature Center to assist on trail hikes and children's activities.
I think the students in the Education & Training Career Cluster would find this camp an extension to what they are learning in class.
I'm attaching the link that lists other activities/field trips I'm planning for the week.
Since middle school doesn't send home Friday folders, I don't know how to get the word out to students and their parents.

Jobs For Teens

My name is Ron and I'm a college professor who has created a resource that is very helpful for teenagers looking for work.
You can find it here: www.JobsForTeensHQ.com
It's focused specifically on helping teenagers find jobs and it's 100% free to use for both the students and the school. It has very useful information including work permit requirements, labor laws, jobs for teens by city/state, job ideas, jobs by age, and more.
My question to you is, would you be willing to include this as a resource on the school website?  Or, would you be willing to put me in contact with the person who can make this happen?
I'm sure you're going to want to look over it before you consider including it, so I’ve made a quick video that can help.
Simply put, it's the best resource out there to help teenagers find jobs and we're extremely excited about it

Denison University's Young Writer's Workshop

Why should your students have to wait until college to start honing their craft in poetry, fiction, and nonfiction?

Every summer for more than two decades, talented high school students (current sophomores and juniors) have been welcomed to Denison University in Granville, Ohio, for the acclaimed Reynolds Young Writers Workshop. The workshop is an eight-day residential program that incorporates small creative writing workshops, group sessions with Denison creative writing faculty and notable visiting writers, and much more. Encourage your students to apply today!

Only 36 students get the chance to come to "The Hill" to participate each June. That means students experience small, intimate writing workshops and one-on-one interactions with people who have made writing their career. It's a great way to connect with a close-knit community of writing teachers, mentors, and peers from around the world.

This is your students' chance to work with award-winning authors whose work has appeared in publications like The New YorkerThe Atlantic, and SB Nation; who have published books; who care deeply about storytelling; and who love to teach.

The program runs from June 17–24, 2018. Financial assistance is available to families who need it, and information about the program is online at reynolds.denison.edu. Applications must be submitted no later than Sunday, March 4, 2018, at 11:59 p.m. Your students canapply today!

Thank you for encouraging your students to consider this opportunity. If you or they have any questions, you can reach us at reynoldswriting@denison.edu or at 740-587-6207.

Beginning The College Admission Process?

As usual, Rick Clark has a relatable post of the college admissions process.  His posts are witty and filled with great tips for approaching a season of life that can feel overwhelming.  You won't regret taking the time to read his thoughts of a better path of navigating the world of college admissions:

The Rules They Keep On A Changin'

Registration- Setting The Pace For 2018-2019

We are gearing up for Registration!  This is the time of year where we register for classes that will be taken during the 2018-19 school year.  There are a multitude of options for students to choose.  Good deliberation is wise.  This whole process is built to provide students and parents good information to use when making choices about courses.  Attending the events and paying attention to the details will help the student and the parent to make decisions that they will be most comfortable with when August rolls around and we are taking the courses that we registered for. We attempt to create a seat for your student based on the courses that they request.   PLEASE put these events on your calendar and make every effort to be a part of the process.

Wednesday, February 14th- During Titan Time, the counselors will host a NINTH GRADE class meeting (for students only) to talk about registration issues that impact current freshmen.  Attendance will be mandatory for all freshmen and will provide advanced notice of important information surrounding registration.

Thursday, February 15th- During Titan Time, the counselors will host a TENTH GRADE class meeting (for students only) to talk about registration issues that impact current sophomores.  Attendance will be mandatory for all sophomores and will provide advanced notice of important information surrounding registration.

Friday, February 16th- During Titan Time, the counselors will host an ELEVENTH GRADE class meeting (for students only) to talk about registration issues that impact current juniors.  Attendance will be mandatory for all juniors and will provide advanced notice of important information surrounding registration.

Monday and Tuesday, February 19th and 20th- Students will meet with teachers who taught them first semester to get recommendations about what courses to sign up for within the teacher's department.  For example, if my student took English first semester, the English teacher would make a recommendation for your student and sign the registration form for the English course that he or she should take in the 2016-17 school year.  This recommendation will be based upon the performance of your student in the last English class completed.

Monday, February 19th- Curriculum Night, 5:30 to 7:00.  This is a drop-in event where all of our teachers will be in the building to answer questions about classes that they teach.  This is a really important time that both student and parent can come and learn about all the course options that are available to NOHS.  Students will have teachers available to sign registration forms.  AP Information sessions will be offered by teachers who teach all Advanced Placement courses from 5:00-6:30 pm on a repeating basis, so you can attend all that you are interested in.

NOHS Counselors will also be available to students in the cafeteria from February 13th-February 21st to answer individual questions about registration.

North Oconee High School has created a registration link on the school website for parents and students to use as a reference throughout this process.  Please plan on taking an active role in these important decisions.
