Info about Georgia State University

This past week, a counselor and our intern from NOHS were able to visit Georgia State University. We are lucky to have Brittany Cone intern one day a week from Adams State University and this is what she wrote about what she learned on the visit!

Campus Life: There are a total of seven campuses throughout metro Atlanta comprising of 51,000+ students, including 3,000 international students from 170 countries!  To say GSU is diverse would be an understatement.  Several other rankings are listed on GSU’s website which include #2 Most Innovative University in the U.S. and #2 Best Undergraduate Teaching in the U.S.  Students interested in attending GSU will be able to choose from dozens of nationally ranked and recognized programs and more than 250 majors, minors and pathways in which they may obtain an associate, undergraduate, graduate or Ph.D. degree.

GSU’s main campus is in the heart of Atlanta and although many students choose to commute, GSU has multiple housing options for those who want to experience campus life.  Each dorm is unique and tailored to make the student feel at home by consisting of a dining hall, study rooms, TV/Game rooms, music rooms and more.  Even better is that each dorm is within walking distance to class! The StudentRecreation Center is a beautiful facility that includes anything you can imagine from state-of-the-art fitness equipment, basketball court, Olympic size swimming pool, and fitness classes everyday which are included in tuition! In addition to the Student Recreation Center and just down the road is the Student Center which consists of a food court, the University Bookstore, a theater, and much more.  This is also where Greek Life offices are and speaking of Greek Life, GSU is home to 30 Greek fraternities and sororities.

Admissions Requirements and Process:  Students wishing to apply to GSU’s undergraduate program will be admitted based on SAT/ACT scores, high school GPA, freshman index, and high school GPA in college preparatory courses, which is what NOHS's academics are considered.  For fall semester, admissions applications open August 1st and closes on June 1st.  Priority application deadline closes on March 1st while Honors and Scholarship Priority consideration deadline is November 15th.  Those wishing to begin in Spring semester should apply by December 1st.  Georgia State makes the application process seamless and for more tips on applying, visit the How to Apply page on GSU’s website.

Scholarships:  The wonderful part of Georgia State is that students are eligible for the HOPE & Zell scholarships.  However, GSU offers a plethora of scholarships for those seeking financial assistance and are based on financial need and academic merit.  University-wide awards are one-time and may be paid in one semester or split between fall and spring semester of the year awarded. The deadline for the university-wide scholarships are in February.  A step-by-step guide is listed on GSU’s website.

Majors/Minors:  A few of GSU’s specialty colleges include J. Mack Robinson College of BusinessByrdine F. Lewis College of Nursing and Health ProfessionsCollege of Lawand Honors College for an enhanced opportunity for academic achievement.  Several other specialty colleges can be found on the GSU website. On our visit to GSU, the tour guide stressed the uniqueness of The Robinson College of Business.  This program is the sixth largest business school in the U.S. and the largest in the Southeast!  From computer science to engineering to real estate, this college has something for everyone.  Students can go the traditional route or obtain a dual degree.  Another college that the tour guide was bragging on was GSU’s College of Nursing and Health Professions.  Programs range from nursing, health informatics, nutrition, and several others.  If you are interested in healthcare, GSU may be the school for you.  Although some programs can be competitive, it is safe to say that the outcome will be worth it because of the extensive training/teaching offered. The Department of Communication within the College of Arts and Sciences is one of the most popular departments at GSU which include journalism, speech, and media production.

Unique Programs and Opportunities for Students:  GSU offers the Panther Excellence Program for first year students.  This program helps students’ success academically and interpersonally by providing individualized study skills training, peer mentoring, group study sessions, social networking events and many more services.  Students should apply after acceptance into GSU.  Other opportunities that were mentioned on the tour are the study abroad programs.  GSU offers multiple programs where students can spend a few weeks, semester, a year or spring break abroad while earning course credits!  This is a unique way of learning by experiencing different cultures in the process.

Visiting Campus:  Main Campus tours are available Monday-Friday at 10am and 2pm.  Multiple upcoming special events/information sessions through each specialty college are on the schedule for fall/winter 2018 as well as tours for other GSU campuses by appointment.
