The University of Texas at Dallas has a truly unique and
remarkable history. A pioneering spirit
was cultivated by it's creators: Eugene
McDermott, Erik Jonsson, and Cecil Green.
These three men were innovators and have established an institution that
is unique and thriving as a result of their visionary spirit and hard work.
McDermott, Jonsson, and Green might be names that are
familiar to you. They were the
developers of Texas Instruments. The
calculators that many of you use daily in math class were created by these
three gentlemen. The creation of Texas
Instruments was a key component to the development of University of
Texas-Dallas. The innovative spirit was
one that the business wanted to cultivate on their campus. The founders felt confident that Texas
Instruments would thrive if they could cultivate a pipeline for academic talent
in the state of Texas. In 1961, the
founding of Southwest Center for Advanced Study was established. The program then grew into the UT-Dallas
campus in 1969. The school started with
408 students on campus.
The history of UT- Dallas is very unique. Many colleges are created to learn first and
then go into the workforce. UT-Dallas
was built with the idea of research and work first. This motto has been instrumental in building
a strong workforce in Texas. As their
reputation has grown, so has their student body. 29,000 students now walk the campus of
UT-Dallas. What a growth from 408
students to 29,000! Options for
involvement on campus have tripled since the number of students has . They offer 325 student organizations and
Division 3 athletic program.
Although it is a young school it is on the rise and gaining
notice from the ranking community.

The university has focused on research and they are hopeful
to engage more students in the process.
Recently, the university earned a grant of $7 million to help students
have more access to research opportunities on campus. The college offers over 140 academic programs
and 8 schools.
National Merit Scholarships and the McDermott Scholar
Program is highly competitive and SUPER impressive. There are over 500 National Merit Scholars
on campus currently. By recruiting
highly motivated students and grooming them for success, UT Dallas is able to
tout impressive numbers. 72% of their
medical students are earning a seat in a medical school program while the
national average is 40%. They work with
students to provide professional application guidance and support, research
opportunities, interview practice, seminars for preparation, and various other
resources.
