Developing a college list is something that takes time, research, and conversation. Below are three great posts that were released recently that can help families begin to figure out their approach to creating a good "fit" for their student. Check out the articles below and subscribe to the admissions blog, if one is available, at the college that is on your student's college list. Admission blogs are great resources of information about the college of interest as well as the entire college admission process.
Not So Fast- this article is created to help families think through the entire process of finding a good college fit for their student. Numbers definitely play a role in admission, but what numbers should parents/students be focused on when making a decision. This is a great read for those who are in the beginning stages of crafting a college list.
Admissions, Baseball, and the Land of Statistics- The UGA admissions office does a great job of keeping their future/current applicants in the loop about their admissions process and practices. If UGA is on your college admission list, our office highly recommends for you to register for the UGA admission blog. It is a great source of information to keep you in the loop through all aspects of their application.
Personalize Your College Search- Vanderbilt University provided a quick read that provides great steps to help students start the process of an individualized college search. Oftentimes, we hear students that are caught up in where others "think" they should go. We recommend students to take the time to learn about other options. Attending the Titan Time College Visit sessions at NOHS are a great way to learn about schools that may not be on your original list. This week, a student visited the Auburn University rep visit and came out of the session amazed by what he learned. Not only did he learn great information about Auburn University, he learned generalized college admission information that he will use in other college sessions and conversations. The college process can be filled with new terms and processes. The more students hear the new terms and learn more about the processes, the better informed they are to make the best decision for them. We highly encourage students to come to the rep visit sessions that we host at NOHS during Titan Time. They are packed full of great information!
Success Isn't Guaranteed, Try Anyway- Our office is often asked "should I do this or that" questions. This article helps students and parents see that failure is not a bad thing. Balance is key in figuring out how hard to push oneself. Many of our students are masters at saying how hard they work without truly being challenged. We want our students to be successful when they graduate from NOHS and failure can be a part of finding success. In terms of failure, we are not referring to the failure of a class, we are referring to their first B on a test or not getting a part in the school play. High school should be about preparation for college and life and unfortunately failure is a part of that reality. If success isn't guaranteed, do our students try anyway? We want the answer to be a resounding yes! We want our students to feel comfort in giving their best shot and being ok with whatever outcome stems from their efforts. It is a great read!
