Happenings In The Counseling Office: September 9th - September 13th

Lunch & Learn:
The NOHS Counseling Office is offering lunch and learn opportunities to help seniors with their journey through the college application process.  We have broken our sessions down to four separate sessions for a total of 4 days of events.
Tuesday:  Organization & College Applications
Wednesday:  Letters of Recommendations: Best Practices
Thursday:  Crafting a College Essay
Friday:  Q&A with the Counselors

Please encourage your student to attend these sessions.  We are unable to schedule individual meetings to discuss the topics listed above.

Tuesday, September 10th:

Coffee with the Counselors

The NOHS Counseling Department is looking forward to hosting our 2nd Coffee with the Counselors event.  We thoroughly enjoyed the conversations that developed in our first session (picture above) and are looking forward to continuing the discussion this week.  Our session will be held in the PLC (room connected to the counseling office) from 7:30 am until 8:15 am.

The topic for this session is: The Role of The Parent in the College Admission Process.
This session is applicable to parents grades 9-12.

Organization & College Applications
Students do you need help organizing the college application process?  There are several moving parts, do you have a plan in place to make sure that all of your items are checked off the list by the deadline date?  Seniors can attend a lunch and learn during their standard lunch time in the PLC.  Make plans to sit in on this session and craft a plan of action for the college application process.

Wednesday, September 11th:

College Rep on Campus during Titan Time:  University of Arizona

Letters of Recommendation- Best Practices
Do you need a recommendation for your college/scholarship application?  If not, no need to ask a teacher for one.  If you DO need a letter of recommendation, attend our lunch and learn to hear about the process.  How do you ask your teacher to write a letter of recommendation?  What do they need from you to make it a good one?  How long do they need to craft a personal letter of recommendation for you?  This session will provide great tips on this process to ensure that you and your teachers are on the same page about this part of the process.  Seniors can attend a lunch and learn in the PLC during their standard lunch time.

Thursday, September 12th:

College Rep on Campus during Titan Time:  University of Alabama-Birmingham

Crafting a College Essay
The essay is a student's time to shine and make their application personal.  This session is designed to provide tips and resources for students, as they begin to think through their topics for college applications and scholarships.  Come learn what topics to stay away from and what information colleges hope that essays will provide for them in the decision making process.  This session will be held in the PLC during a student's standard lunch time.

Friday, September 13th:

College Rep on Campus During Titan Time:  Davidson College

Q&A with Counselors:  Seniors should head to the PLC during their standard lunch time to ask their counselor questions about their applications.  The counselors will be on standby to review application(s) or provide feedback on essays.
