Dealing With Loss During The Holiday Season

Grief and loss are difficult no matter when it occurs, yet 2020 has amplified the intensity of loss for many of our students, faculty/staff, and community. While the holidays are typically thought of as a time for togetherness with family and loved ones it can also amplify the grieving experience of individuals coping with loss. During this holiday season, we have families that are grieving the physical loss of a loved one. We offer our condolences for your loss and we have listed resources below to provide support for our families/community during a difficult season.

This year has also brought on an immense amount of change and transition for all of us as we are grieving activities and relationships that have been interrupted by COVID-19. Whether the change is limiting family interactions, travel plans, financial adjustments, and/or family traditions, it is a disappointment for many that feel that they have been dealt many disappointments already this year. We feel that it is healthy to discuss the adjustments that are happening this holiday season with your loved ones. We have listed resources below to assist with facilitating conversations as well as offering ideas for new traditions/activities.

As with any type of loss, it can be difficult but beautiful moments can occur in times of change. Embrace the joy and peace where you can find it and encourage your student to find those moments as well. We invite you to take this time to focus on building the relationships with the ones that you are with this holiday season and make the most of these moments that you will share this week.

In an effort to support our students, families and staff in their time of loss, the NOHS Counseling Office has also linked resources and hotlines for students/families to utilize in the case of an emergency during the holiday season.

Stay safe this holiday season and we hope that you have a wonderful Thanksgiving break!
