Creative Scholars: Application Open

Apply for the 2021 UGA Mary Frances Early College of Education's Creative Scholars Program!
APPLY BY SUNDAY, JUNE 6th!

The Creative Scholars Program is an overnight summer camp for students in grades 7-10, hosted on the University of Georgia’s campus. Creative Scholars can expect a course curriculum in specialty topics that they would not typically experience in a regular classroom. Instructors are trained to use research-driven, creative strategies in the classroom while teaching courses that are innovative, interdisciplinary, and project-based.

Students will take one course for the duration of the two-week program. We will do our best to place our Creative Scholars in their number one course choice. Course size is expected to be 15-20 students and student to staff ratio is 10:1 during all academic and residential activities.
Tuition and fees
Total tuition for the program is $2,300, which includes room, board, classroom supply fees, and most program-associated recreational activity costs. The fee schedule is:
  • Application fee, nonrefundable: $50, due with application submission
  • First payment: $450, due by Thursday, June 10
  • Second payment: $900, due by Sunday, June 20
  • Final payment: $900, due by Monday, July 5

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Creative Writing Deep Dive: Honing your Craft
Honing your writing skills requires two major elements: reading a lot and writing a lot. In this course, students will immerse themselves in their own writing, their peers’ writing, and published writing. We will closely examine fiction and poetry (and some things in between), discussing how we, as readers, react to writing and how writers achieve those effects. To develop original writing, students will respond to writing prompts, give and receive feedback in class workshops, and meet with their instructor in one-on-one conferences to talk about potential revisions. This course will center on growth: no matter how much our students know about writing when they enter, they will learn more about the craft when they leave. This course will culminate in a revised portfolio of students’ favorite written pieces, along with a few reflections on how they can carry what they have learned into their future writing.

Beyond the Physical Realm: Virtual and Augmented Reality
Go beyond reality! Students in the virtual and augmented reality course will have the chance to explore the cutting edge of technology as it seeks to entertain, educate, and explore far beyond what we see around us. Students will learn the concepts and underlying technology that goes into VR/AR content, its possibilities, and the myriad of ways it can be applied in both practical and theoretical fields. Additionally, students will learn how VR/AR works at the psychological level to pull them into a world of someone else’s (or their own) making. Learn how to prepare for future education and careers in VR/AR technology, and wrap it all up by working with a group to plan out and propose their own virtual or augmented reality app.

Sports Medicine
This course will explore what makes a great athlete on a holistic level. Learn about the underlying physiology, anatomy, nutrition, sport psychology, motor skills, strength and conditioning, and biomechanics that we see on the athletic field. Additionally, this class will explore working with special populations and learn about adapted physical activity that is inclusive to different types of athletes of all ages. Campers will get to interview a panel of sports medicine professionals at UGA, perform exercise testing and interpret results, learn sideline assessments for sport-related injuries, and design a week-long research project where they will use lab techniques and evidence-based scientific literature to answer their specific research question.

Mock Trial and Criminology
The mock trial and criminology course will provide students with knowledge about the Georgia legal system by studying real criminal cases in a mock law school classroom setting. Students also will gain mock trial hands-on experience as they prepare a mock criminal case for trial. Additionally, students will develop critical thinking and analytical skills and hone writing, research, roleplaying, acting, and speaking skills.

Disease Detectives: Introduction to Microbiology and Epidemiology
Interested in science, medicine, microbiology, and public health? This class will introduce our students to the amazing world of microbiology in the context of the environment, human biology, and public health. In this course, students will learn to identify and describe microbes that cause infectious diseases, describe and sketch how microbes can move from person-to-person and through the environment, propose interventions to prevent future infections, solve mysterious cases of disease, and analyze epidemiological data to investigate disease outbreaks. This course will provide case studies related to the current COVID-19 pandemic and examine real-world data collected by researchers at the University of Georgia.

Robotics
In this exciting course, students will learn elements of robot design, programming, and the purpose of contemporary robots. We will use computational thinking and decision-making skills to create robots that follow instructions efficiently and effectively. Additionally, this course will address artificial intelligence and innovation in how we approach robots of the future.

Neuropsychology
How does brain development affect perception, judgment, and decision-making? Understanding the intersection and interaction of the human brain and behavior is at the heart of neuropsychology. Study the physiology of the brain and cognitive functions that affect behavior. Students will investigate how the brain works by also considering neuroscientific, philosophical, neurological, and psychiatric perspectives.

The Young and Successful: Entrepreneurship Workshop
What does it take to “make it” in the world of business? How do start-ups work? What types of businesses do people need from both local and global perspectives? In this course, students will learn the nuances of organization, leadership, branding, marketing, team-building, financial decision-making, and more through the lens of entrepreneurship. Students will develop their own business plans throughout the program and leave with a unique understanding of business leadership and how to start their own companies.
