Dear Colleague, I wrote to you last month to introduce you to the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York (USMMA). USMMA is one of the five federal service academies that include West Point, Annapolis, Air Force, and Coast Guard academies. This month, I would like to share some important information concerning congressional nominations. Like the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA), the U.S. Military Academy (USMA), and the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA), the USMMA requires all applicants to apply for and receive a congressional nomination from either a U.S. Representative or a U.S. Senator from their state of residence. Only the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) does not require applicants to obtain a congressional nomination. USNA, USMA, and USAFA permit nominations only from the student’s U.S. senators and congressional representative. Students interested in attending USMMA have additional opportunities for nominations. In addition to their two U.S. senators, applicants to USMMA may apply to any and all members of congress in their state. This affords USMMA applicants more opportunities to secure these coveted appointments. Each congressional member (both House and Senate) has different requirements and deadlines for students seeking a congressional appointment to the federal service academies including USMMA. Students can find these requirements under “Academy Nominations” or “Constituent Services” on each member’s official .gov website.
We encourage your junior year students to complete their nomination applications as soon as possible as most congressional offices have started accepting applications and will evaluate candidates in early fall. Students interested in federal service academies such as USMMA are competing for a very few openings in their home state. Students applying to USMMA can give themselves an increased chance of receiving a nomination by applying to more than one congressional member in their state.
Students are encouraged to visit usmma.edu/admissions to learn more about the Academy and to start their application. Please note that the student must complete applications to the USMMA and their nominating members of congress.
