Volunteers Needed

Happy summer, team ACCA!

With school letting out and schedules filling up, volunteers are needed over the summer at ACCA more than ever. And volunteering with friends and family is a great way to have a great time and make a difference!

Luckily, no matter your age or abilities, there are plenty of opportunities coming up this summer for service, fun and involvement.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

ARE YOU HANDY AND 55+?

ACCA Fix-It Shop
If you have a knack for installing grab bars or know how to unclog a J-bend like a pro, this is the group for you! The ACCA Fix-It Shop is a volunteer-run team of handy people who use their skills to make small DIY improvements to clients’ homes.

KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT MEDICARE?

The State Health Insurance Program (SHIP)

The SHIP program, formerly GeorgiaCares, is recruiting volunteers to serve as benefits counselors to provide free and unbiased information on Medicare. Volunteers receive in-depth and ongoing training, ensuring they’re able to best serve beneficiaries. SHIP counselors can help clients better understand their Medicare health plan choices, enroll in a Medicare plan that meets their needs, review Medicare Summary Notice(s), review Explanation of Benefits, sort through medical bills and more.

WANT TO TAKE A SPIN AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD?

Meals on Wheels drivers
We need regular and substitute Meals on Wheels drivers to ensure that our neighbors continue receiving their nutritious meals and friendly visits over the summer. We’d love for you to join one of our teams in Winder or Athens!

Take-Out-Tuesday
Take-Out Tuesday brings groceries to older adults and their families who are unable to grocery shop for themselves. Volunteers may arrive any time between 12 and 2 p.m. to pick up their bags and route sheets, and routes run from 45 minutes to 1 and a half hours.

“I first heard about ACCA when I was reading an article in the Barrow County News about the Meals on Wheels program here in Barrow County. Amy Joyce, who was in charge of the program in Barrow County was looking for volunteers so that she could expand the program from three days a week to five. I decided to contact her and find out more about the program.

“I was looking for something to do. I moved to Winder in 2004 and retired in 2005 from my job with the federal government. I needed something to keep me busy, and was looking for a volunteer opportunity. This seemed like a good fit.

“As a volunteer, I deliver meals to a number of people who might otherwise not have a nutritious meal to eat. But more importantly, in a number of instances I represent one of the few opportunities for these people to interact with someone.

“Volunteering makes me feel like I am doing something useful, and makes me feel good. I really enjoy talking to my ‘clients’ and finding out how they are doing.

“MOW doesn’t take but about an hour a week, and is very rewarding. I would encourage anyone with a desire to make a difference and a little free time to look into volunteering.” Robert Lanham, Meals on Wheels Volunteer
