Governor's Honors Program:  The Time Is Now!

The Governor's Honors Program (GHP) is a highly selective program for gifted and talented high school students.  This is a residential summer program that allows for students to experience academic, cultural, and social enrichment; students have the opportunity to major and study in an area of concentration while exploring other academic or artistic genres through minor studies.  Students collaborate with other like-minded peers as they learn from prestigious faculty from across the state.  GHP is an experience like none other as it seeks to facilitate an environment that fosters the development of global critical thinkers, innovators, and leaders in the next generation of students.

Think GHP sounds amazing?  You are right!  How do you find out more about this opportunity?  GHP is ONLY open to current sophomores and juniors.  Students must be nominated (either by a teacher or self-nominated) to compete in one of the 11 content areas. Check out the links below to learn more about areas of nomination, the application process, and the selection process.  Mrs. Dooley is your point of contact on GHP, and she will hold an information session for all interested sophomores and juniors this Friday, September 23rd, during Titan Time in the PLC (next to the counseling office).  So if you think you have what it takes to compete with the best around the state and you would like to self-nominate for GHP, please make plans to attend the meeting as Mrs. Dooley will break it all down for you.  Hope to see you Friday!

College visit costs adding up? A College Fly-In program might be a great option for you to visit a campus for free!

Is there a college campus that you would love to visit but you do not have the resources to venture out to the campus?  A great college admissions website, JLV College Counseling, has posted a list of colleges that provide fly-in programs for students that meet certain criteria.  Check out this list to see if there might be some great options for your student!  This might be an excellent opportunity for students to visit some programs that they are not very familiar with and would allow them to expand their college search, without costing your family pocketbook a penny.

UPCOMING Graduation Writing Test

The Georgia High School Graduation Writing Test will be given next week at NOHS.  Students will take the test on Wednesday, September 24th.  All juniors must take this exam.  Also, seniors who moved in last spring and missed last year's administration or did not successfully pass the exam last year must also take this test.  This is a REQUIREMENT to GRADUATE, so it is very important that you are here next Wednesday and perform at your best.  Lists of students that need to take the Writing Test are posted on the windows of the hallway leading from the front office to the common areas.  Please check the lists, and ask your counselor if you have questions.

NASA Opportunity for Female High School Juniors

Women in STEM High School Aerospace Scholars (WISH) is an interactive on-line science, technology, engineering and mathematics learning experience for female high school juniors from across the U.S., culminating in a one-week residential experience at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston.  Offered at no cost to the student, WISH consists of seven online modules and a final project from January 2014 through May 2014 under the guidance of certified educators.  Based on success in the online coursework, students may be selected to attend a week-long summer experience where they will interact with NASA scientists, engineers and technologists to design a human mission to Mars.  Additionally throughout the online portion and summer experience, these young women will be introduced to NASA female role models who will share their education and career paths.

Interested students can access the application and additional information at the following website:

Young Dawgs Applications

The Young Dawgs program is one that allows juniors or seniors to leave for one or two class periods each semester of 2014-2015 and work along side of a research professor at UGA. NOHS students are able to work in the research process and have amazing experiences to report on college applications. This year spots are limited and students who are very interested will want to go to see Ms. Frutiger or Ms. Taylor in the student center before February 26 to complete your application.
