Campus Life: Augusta University is located in Augusta, GA, about 1.5-2 hours away from the Oconee County area. It's the smallest research one institution in Georgia (the other 3 are UGA, GA Tech, and GA State), which provides a great opportunity for students to have hands-on research experience with Professors as an undergraduate. It has about 9,000 students enrolled, with 5,500 of that being undergraduates. Augusta University serves 150 mile radius of their city, so it serves parts of Georgia, North and South Carolina, and a teeny part of Tennessee.
Admissions Requirements and Process: The Early Action (non-binding) deadline is November 15th, with the decisions being released in the beginning of December. After that Early Action deadline, it's a rolling admissions process. The application is through your GA Futures account, and your admissions is based on your GPA, test scores, and high school courses. They do super score both the SAT and ACT. There are no recommendations or essays on their undergraduate application.
Scholarships: The scholarship deadline is February 1st, and there are a lot of opportunities for students. Once accepted, you will complete the scholarship application(s) through your Augusta University account.
Majors/Minors: They have over 40 degrees for undergraduates across 6 colleges. They are also known for their graduate and doctoral/professional programs as well.
Unique Programs: Augusta has two unique programs, called the Professional Scholars Program and Nursing Scholars Program, for highly qualified high school seniors applying as a Freshman, and are 150% sure they want to either be a Nurse, Dentist, or Doctor. These programs allow students to be accepted into Nursing, Dental, or Medical school when they start college. Each year, they accept 10 students for Dental, 30-40 for Medical, and 20 for Nursing.
The student would apply Early Action, then if they mark they are interested in applying and meet the qualifications, they will be sent a supplemental application, which requires to complete essays and have a recommendation. Students will submit this supplemental application by the mid-January deadline, and will hear back in March regarding admission into the specific program they applied for.
If the student does not get into the scholars program, they can still attend Augusta, then re-apply to Nursing, Dental, or Medical school with the general pool of applicants when they have completed the years of pre-requisites. Augusta does prefer their own graduates, so when applying to these programs, they do like to see that you have completed your core/undergrad (for Medical and Dental) with them. It's not a requirement, but they do like "homegrown" students.
This program is a highly competitive program, with limited spots and hundreds of applicants, but a great thing for students to consider if they are confident that Nursing, Medical, or Dental school is in their future.
Other Info: All freshman will live in Oak Hall, which is only 2 years old. It's not required to live on campus, but encouraged to develop community with other first year students. The meal plan is required if living on campus.
They are Division II in all sports, except Golf, which is Division I, and basketball is a very popular sport at Augusta. Homecoming is based around basketball, since they don't have a football team.
Visiting Campus: There is a Preview day on November 2nd, which you can register for, and this is an opportunity to spend a day on campus, tour housing, participate in college breakouts, and eat lunch! They also have daily tours and you can go on a virtual tour through their website.
