Day 2 Continued: DePauw University

The second half of the day took me to a very different school than the one visited that morning. DePauw Univeristy in Greencastle, Indiana is a liberal arts school.  This means that they focus on more of the classical disciplines of learning in every major they offer.  As with the other entries this week, here are the facts:

  • 2,217 students (46% men)
  • 42 majors
  • Middle 50% ACT- 25-29
  • Middle 50% SAT- 1610-1930
  • Middle 50% GPA- 3.6-4.08
  • 225 full-time professors, 0 Teacher's Assistants
  • Largest class size on campus- 30
  • 66% of students are in either a sorority or fraternity
  • notable alumni: Dan Quayle, Vernon Jordan, Brett Baier (head anchor of Fox News)
  • Total annual cost- $54,000 (financial aid is available)

DePauw is a beautiful campus that is known for is music school.  The music school has an audition process, but unlike many schools of music, non-music majors are allowed to participate in performances through a try out process.  When big name composers are brought in, undergraduate students get a crack at working with them instead of the doctoral students.

The thing that was most impressive about DePauw was the intensive advisement program.  Each student is assigned a team of advisers from each of three offices: Academic Life, Student Life, and the Hubbard Center for Student Engagement.  Each focuses on a different aspect of the student's collegiate education.  Academic Life is the focus on course selection as it pertains to major and career goals.  Student Life works with students to help them identify areas of university life that will engage the student in social, philanthropic, and leadership endeavors that will contribute greatly to the education one receives in college. The office of Student Engagement works with students to help them connect with life-enhancing experiences like internships, travel abroad, and the marketing of themselves for the next stage of life.

This type of advisement is meant to be transformative.  It is meant to bring a college student from being a kid in the freshman year and turning out an adult who recognizes and acts upon their potential to be successful economically, in leadership, in the pursuit of the complete experience of adulthood. DePauw takes intellectually bright students and polishes the rough edges to form a complete adult upon graduation.

DePauw is a very safe campus where students and faculty were very friendly.  "Community" is a word used often here and it truly appears to be one that is used naturally out of the daily experience of living in one as contributors and recipients.  DePauw has so much to offer.
