Improve Your PROBE Fair Experience

Don't forget about the PROBE Fair (College Fair) to be held at the Classic Center in downtown Athens on Monday night (the 31st) from 6 pm to 8 pm.  Remember that it is free and AWESOME!  100+ colleges will be in attendance and you will be demonstrating interest in every college you stop at to talk to.  Why is demonstrating interest in a college important?

Today, Sewanee (The University of the South) visited North Oconee, and we had two students who attended this meeting.  After the meeting, Bess Jenkins from the Office of Admissions stopped to talk with us about admission practices for Sewanee.  She stated that a student who has never demonstrated interest in Sewanee has almost a zero chance of being accepted if they apply to Sewanee.  Demonstrating interest helps the college see that there is an established pattern of desire from a student the he or she is interested in Sewanee as their college choice.  The more interested a student is in a college before they are accepted, the higher the likelihood that the student will actually enroll AND contribute to the college environment once there.  That is why it is a big deal to them.  So, how do you "demonstrate interest" in a college?

  • follow them on twitter/facebook
  • go for a campus tour WITH an appointment
  • email the admissions counselor who serves our area
  • fill out an information card at the college's table at the PROBE (we have an easier method detailed below)
  • if a college is visiting NOHS, make sure that you register through this blog and attend that meeting
This is not an exhaustive list.

If you are planning on going to the PROBE Fair on Monday night, here is a cool feature that will make your experience fun and easy.  By going to register.gotocollegefairs.com, you can complete an information form and then print our a QR code that can be zapped at each college's table which will essentially be doing the same job as filling out the information card does.  Bring that form to the PROBE Fair with you.  This will save your student from having to write an address, phone number, etc. twenty or so times on Monday night.  The college rep. will dig it too.
