Who Am I? Am I Mediocre? If so, what does that mean?

As the college admissions season begins to go into overdrive various admission offices begin to crank out excellent advice on the college process.  We follow several of those blogs in the counseling office and find the insight that they provide through social media to be very powerful and insightful.  One such article was included in Georgia Tech's admission blog this week.  As I reviewed the article, I began to reflect on how many of our students feel that they are mediocre and not performing as well as their peers.  When the truth of the matter is that they are a stellar student that possesses many talents.  They get so caught up in what other students are doing that they end up trying to keep up with others that have very different goals than them.

We talk in our counseling and faculty meetings about school culture and how we wish our students would focus on pushing themselves to their personal limit and not their peers.  This article articulates beautifully, in my opinion, what the purpose of education should be about-personal growth and challenge.  Whether you have a student that is a freshman or a senior, this article can help guide them on their journey.  Take the most challenging courses that you can and do the best that you can, but at the end of the day, I hope that they begin to find out who they are and what their place is in this community and world.
