Georgia Hidden Gems
By: Kimberly Lord, Director of College Counseling at Brookwood School
Around the state, many universities have created unique, forward-thinking majors and minors to address the challenges of our changing world. If you have students who are thinking critically about the careers of the future, these programs may be of interest!
College of Coastal Georgia
Information Assurance and Cyber Security (concentration within B.S. in Criminal Justice): This program is focused on developing essential skills around network defense, cyber-security, cryptography and security design. As hacking and data breaches become more extreme and sophisticated, this specialized field that combines computer science and criminal justice will be in high demand.
Mercer University
Religion and Diplomacy (minor): Mercer’s Religion and Diplomacy minor is an interdisciplinary program that “examines the influence of religion on international relations and how religion can be used as a constructive instrument for peace.” Through courses in multiple departments, including Global Studies, Religion and Gender Studies, students will develop skills to promote dialogue and peace-making among different religious groups.
Georgia Southwestern State University
Long Term Care Management (major): As American demographics continue to age, this niche degree will help prepare students to manage institutions and community programs that provide long term and end of life care. GSW also partners with the Aging Life Care Association to give students a pathway to credentialing as a Certified Manager of Care.
University of Georgia
ArtX (concentration within B.F.A. in Art): “The ArtX program involves research and experimentation with technology and time-based forms of art.” It’s designed for students who want to explore non-traditional methods in art and media. While all students develop skills in traditional mediums, ArtX students also push the envelope by incorporating technology, including graphic design, robotics, video and performance.
Emory University
Health Innovation (major): This major, a partnership of the Center for the Study of Human Health and the Goizueta Business School, “offers a broad discourse on the cutting-edge science of health with a focus on innovation in personalized medicine and health, applications and translations involved in global health, the science of nutrition, and current challenges in changing dynamics within the medical system and health policy.” It is a perfect program for students thinking about the intersection of health, business and technology.
