North Oconee High School is allowed to nominate one senior who is a US Citizen, national, or permanent resident (documentation required) to potentially receive the Robert C. Byrd Scholarship, a $1,500 per year (renewable for 4 years) scholarship. North Oconee has had the good fortune of having a senior receive this scholarship all four graduating classes. The North Oconee nominee will have the highest points from the following scoring criteria:
1. A non-weighted, academic cumulative numeric average- possible points (0-100) plus
2. A highest combined critical reading and math score from one or more sitting on the SAT (total will be divided by ten)- possible points (160 max) plus
or
2. A highest composite score from the ACT, converted to a SAT score and then divided by ten- possible points (160 max) plus
3. An essay score based upon the following rubric: Robert C. Byrd Essay Scoring Rubric possible points (0-60)
Seniors who feel that they will be competitive based upon the scoring criteria listed above are encouraged to write and submit the follwing essay: Describe the most challenging and significant personal, artistic, or community project that you have been involved in during the last five years. Give details about why you initiated or chose this project, how your time was spent, what challenges you faced, the person who influenced you the most during this time, the outcome, and possible future applications of this project. Remember to include your personal feelings and reflections on the various aspects of this project. (750 word maximum)
Students who wish to enter this competition only need write and submit the essay. All essay entries are due before Friday, January 22, 2010 by 3:45 pm. Late entries cannot be accepted.
