Honors Programs- Why would I want to participate?

We are often asked about why a student would apply to join the honors program/college.  Is it similar to the honors courses that we offer at NOHS?  Why would I want to take harder classes in college and do extra work?

Most colleges will have some type of honors program or college within their university.  As you are researching campuses and universities, check out the honors programs to see what opportunities an honors program might offer for your student.  Often times, the honors program will provides a smaller study environment, creates a learning community in areas of interest, offer opportunities for research with highly prestigious faculty members, and add an extra level of strength to their resume for grad school.

We have had several alumni that have participated in various programs across the country and have sung the praises of taking the honors path.  Honors colleges and programs vary from school to school. If you are planning to attend a big school, the honors program might be a great way for you to have a smaller learning environment in certain classes.  If you are wanting to attend a smaller college, the honors program might provide you with some experiences that could enrich your experience at a smaller institution.  Explore the option as you begin to research college options.  Requirements and information for the program is typically found on the admissions website.
