Leadership Skills: What Do You Have?

In writing letters of recommendation, I often find that discussing a student's leadership potential is the toughest area to convey.  Reading an article published by the Huffington Post, I gained a better understanding of what colleges really want to see in my letter, a students application, and a teacher letter of recommendation.  They want actions, they want to know specific scenarios that describe how you have demonstrated your leadership skills.  As we are closing down this school year and students are beginning to prepare for their summer experiences, I would like for them to ponder what their leadership portion of an application will look like.  What are those "scenarios" that can be shared that will demonstrate their leadership skills?  We all know people that have titles but don't do anything.  Colleges are aware that those people exist as well.  Sure the titles are awesome but what makes college admission reps excited are the students that are consistently involved, they are motivators, and complete the tasks they are given.  So, as you begin to make summer plans and give consideration to what extracurricular activities the 2017-2018 year holds, think about what your experiences will look like and what stories will you have to share!
